80% of Mobile Users Only Use Their Phone To Make Calls

NPD Group Inc.’s recent survey showed that only 1/5 of mobile phone users, leverage their phones’ capabilities. Most users just use it to make phone calls. Many from around 10% to 30% didn’t know:

If they could listen to music on their phones
If their phone had GPS
That they could access the Internet via wi fi
If their phones could play video

Shocking numbers considering that 71% of mobile phones can play video. While some of these numbers are related to psychographics , those more on the go with the time to play with their device features, much of the ignorance has to do with lack of awareness generated by the phone companies.

While the article doesn’t say it, I wonder how much of that is intentional on the part of the phone distributors as a way to encourage upgrades or to lessen the burden on their pipeline? Any thoughts?
